Stained glass often used as a metaphor to illustrate our broken pieces coming together and forming something beautiful when God’s light shines through us.
I was inside a church over the weekend that was full of stained glass. But it wasn’t your typical stained glass that is forged together to create a work of art; it was simple blocks of glass that were stained.
It reminded me of sin. Specifically, how sin stains us. Yes- Jesus makes forgiveness- clear, un-stained glass possible. But our sinful nature still stains us. Our sin is ever before us.
The stain in the glass of our lives creates a different kind of beauty. It’s a simple, straightforward beauty that shows when our whole stained selves are lined side by side with other wholly stained pieces. Instead of our own broken, stained pieces coming together to form a beautiful image. The entirety of our stained nature comes together in an array of colors. An array of sin and struggle; hurt and pain. Of imperfect people joining together to create something beautiful:
A beautiful image of the church
